Today, Apple announced the iPhone 4S at its “Let’s Talk iPhone” event. The key features about the new device will be its faster processor, iOS 5 and the Siri personal assistant. iCloud was also an important part of this announcement as it now allows device purchases to be used without the need of a computer. This is definitely a win for consumers. But anyway, Apple’s iPhone portfolio is pretty broad and hits all major price points. The iPhone 3GS will now be free. The current iPhone 4 will now be $99. Lastly, the iPhone 4S will be priced at $199, $299 and $399. I can’t wait to see market share numbers in February.

When I saw the headline hit my news feeds, I thought it was an error and once it was confirmed, I couldn’t believe it. My assumption is that Mr. Jobs’ health issues have deepened and one can only hope that if he is sick, he gets well soon. Steve Jobs and Apple have been quite instrumental in shaping our modern day world.

Below is his resignation letter:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Hats off to a man that has definitely inspired me.

However, even a casual observer can see that the iPad has no competition and that cloning Apple’s form factor with a fake tablet operating system from Google will not cut it like Windows did in the 90s.

For the iOS and Mac developers out there, an update to Xcode 4 has made its way into the Mac App Store. Some of the items this update addresses are bugs in documentation downloading and Core Data model editing. It’s 4.5 GB so settle in, it’s going to take a while to download. Enjoy.

I went to check on ordering an iPad 2 (against someone’s wishes because this person said I don’t need one, but that’s another blog post) and the delay is now 4-5 weeks. I’m no logistics expert (but I did take a class in college to be one – just kidding), and for the life of me, I can’t understand why Apple did not anticipate this.

Fortunately for them, the competition is anemic and the iPad is proven to be the “it” device to own, so, chances are there won’t be too many (if any) lost sales. Unfortunately for them, they are missing out on potential revenue and I can’t help but wonder how this will affect their international rollout.

Apple created this category only a year ago and now there are slew of wannabes trying to get in the game. Do yourself a favor and stick with the original. Apple has proven time and again that they are the drivers of innovation in this space. Let me ask you this. Why buy a Hyundai (an imitator) when what you want is a Mercedes-Benz (the real deal)?
